Hey, I relocated for work and Rent is about $2,228/month for a decent place. Median household income is $133,142, which feels pretty solid for the area. The suburbs are where most families end up. The food scene here is surprisingly good. What are your go-to spots? The suburbs are where most families end up. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The weather takes some getting used to. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 5 years ago from Minneapolis and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Springfield. It's surprisingly good for what you get.
Jobs: The market is established right now, especially in construction. If you're in marketing you might struggle.
People: Generally excellent. It took about 13 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: challenging. Tons of options if you like Thai.

Weather-wise, the summers are decent and winters are manageable. You get used to it after the first year.

We moved here with our family and I'm still on the fence after all this time. Schools in West area are better than expected. Kids love it here.

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want community vibe, then yeah this place is great. But if cultural scene matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 6 years ago from Pittsburgh and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Midtown. It's better than expected for what you get.
Jobs: The market is wild right now, especially in government. If you're in healthcare you might struggle.
People: Generally average. It took about 13 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: average. Tons of options if you like Thai.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem decent.
I've been here 6 years and I have mixed feelings honestly. The thing nobody mentions is nightlife. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the weather is legit. And if you're into photography, this place is improving.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Meadowbrook side vs the The Heights side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a social worker who relocated here from LA about 11 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and family.
Pros I've experienced:
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Good internet infrastructure
- Active local events and festivals
Cons that are real:
- Road conditions need improvement
- Homeless population growing downtown
Financially, we've found it underrated compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are reasonable, gas is better than expected.
Socially, it's exactly what I was looking for. Happy to answer more specific questions..
