Not sure if this has been asked before, but The median home value here is around $503,400, which is pretty steep. The city has invested a lot in new development. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Has anyone dealt with this? Downtown has improved a lot in recent years.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value walkability, you'll love it. The housing market is genuinely excellent and I've found it was the best decision I ever made. My neighborhood (Cedar Grove) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from LA, be prepared for the culture shock. traffic is completely different here. And Nightlife is limited.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.
I've been here 4 years and I genuinely enjoy living here. The thing nobody mentions is school system. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the job market is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is decent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Oak Park side vs the West side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Happy to answer more specific questions..

We moved here with our family and the quality of life is solid. Schools in North area are tough. Kids love it here.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a social worker who relocated here from Baltimore about 15 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and quality of life.
Pros I've experienced:
- Strong job market in several industries
- Good internet infrastructure
- Affordable housing options
Cons that are real:
- Nightlife is limited
- Urban sprawl is real
Financially, we've found it tough compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are established, gas is better than expected.
Socially, I love the pace of life here. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Hot take but it was the best decision I ever made. I know a lot of people disagree but after 2 years here, that's my honest assessment.

I'm a HR manager who relocated here from New York about 15 years ago. The main reasons were a job opportunity and retirement.
Pros I've experienced:
- Decent public transit for the size
- Close to major attractions
- Good airport with direct flights
Cons that are real:
- Winters are long and cold
- Urban sprawl is real
Financially, we've found it surprisingly good compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are stable, gas is hit or miss.
Socially, I have mixed feelings honestly. Hope this helps!.

Weather-wise, the summers are surprisingly good and winters are reasonable. You get used to it after the first year.
