Hey, I'm retired and It's a a small town city with about 10,384 people. Average temperature is around 65--F, so the weather is moderate. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Would love some local perspective. The suburbs are where most families end up. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus.

Background: I'm a contractor, 57, moved here 5 years ago from Pittsburgh. I've lived in Meadowbrook and Midtown, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Great outdoor activities nearby
2. Diverse dining options
3. Strong sense of community
4. The people are generally tough - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Limited high-paying job options
2. Bugs and humidity in summer
3. The school system situation is competitive and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Meadowbrook: Great for families. underrated vibes, walkable.
- Midtown: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Pittsburgh, everything felt underrated. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are wild. Gas is competitive. You can live comfortably on $40K-$120K here.

If you value pet-friendliness, you'll love it. The public transit is genuinely pretty good and I've found it's improved dramatically in recent years. My neighborhood (Eastside) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from New York, be prepared for the culture shock. dating scene is completely different here. And Summers can be brutally hot.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

If you value nightlife, you'll love it. The dating scene is genuinely excellent and I've found it's not perfect but it works for me. My neighborhood (Sunset) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Houston, be prepared for the culture shock. job market is completely different here. And Winters are long and cold.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
