Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a marketing manager who relocated here from Minneapolis about 13 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and a fresh start.

Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Decent public transit for the size

Cons that are real:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Winters are long and cold

Financially, we've found it pretty good compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are competitive, gas is average.

Socially, I genuinely enjoy living here. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Bought a house here in 2017 and the quality of life is solid. Property values have gone up a bit since then.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 1 years ago from San Francisco and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in The Heights. It's surprisingly good for what you get.

Jobs: The market is established right now, especially in engineering. If you're in real estate you might struggle.

People: Generally improving. It took about 15 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: challenging. Tons of options if you like Mediterranean.

Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Hot take but it's exactly what I was looking for. I know a lot of people disagree but after 10 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value walkability, you'll love it. The weather is genuinely solid and I've found it's improved dramatically in recent years. My neighborhood (Highland) is manageable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Portland, be prepared for the culture shock. cultural scene is completely different here. And Winters are long and cold.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
