Fort Hood quality of life -am I missing something?
Hey folks, I'm a remote worker and Median household income is $59,661, which feels about average for the area. The unemployment rate is 2.4%, which is pretty low. The suburbs are where most families end up. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Let me know your thoughts. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Property taxes are high but you get good services. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Property taxes are high but you get good services.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value weather, you'll love it. The weather is genuinely improving and I've found the quality of life is solid. My neighborhood (Greenfield) is established and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Portland, be prepared for the culture shock. outdoor recreation is completely different here. And Not very walkable outside downtown.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

We moved here with our family and I genuinely enjoy living here. Schools in Westside area are surprisingly good. Kids love it here.

As someone who grew up here, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. A lot has changed in the past few years though. weather used to be much wild but now it's decent.
