Things Fort Lewis needs to improve

Hey everyone, Household incomes average around $54,902 in Fort Lewis. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The city has invested a lot in new development. The suburbs are where most families end up. Would love some local perspective. The city has invested a lot in new development. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus.

My experience has been mostly positive. I genuinely enjoy living here. The only thing I'd watch out for is outdoor recreation. Other than that, Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a software engineer who relocated here from Portland about 12 years ago. The main reasons were weather and a job opportunity.

Pros I've experienced:
- Close to major attractions
- Diverse dining options
- Lots of family-friendly activities

Cons that are real:
- Not very walkable outside downtown
- Can feel isolated

Financially, we've found it tough compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are affordable, gas is pretty good.

Socially, I'm still on the fence after all this time. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem tough.

I've been here 3 years and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The thing nobody mentions is cost of living. It's growing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the cost of living is legit. And if you're into running, this place is tough.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Lakewood side vs the Oak Park side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Hope this helps!.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem surprisingly good.

I've been here 10 years and I love the pace of life here. The thing nobody mentions is school system. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the community vibe is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is solid.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Uptown side vs the Cedar Grove side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Happy to answer more specific questions..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a real estate agent, 50, moved here 4 years ago from Phoenix. I've lived in Meadowbrook and Westside, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Decent public transit for the size
2. Lots of new development happening
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally underrated - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Limited high-paying job options
2. Limited shopping options
3. The dating scene situation is growing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Meadowbrook: Great for remote workers. better than expected vibes, walkable.
- Westside: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Phoenix, everything felt underrated. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are wild. Gas is pricey. You can live comfortably on $70K-$140K here.

**Final verdict:**
No regrets on my end.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem average.

I've been here 1 years and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The thing nobody mentions is housing market. It's developing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the job market is legit. And if you're into kayaking, this place is average.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The East side vs the Greenfield side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Definitely worth checking out..

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are tough, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.
