Is it worth buying in Fort Madison?

Hi all, We're a young couple and Homes are going for about $95,900 on average. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Is this normal for Fort Madison? There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem underrated.

I've been here 3 years and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The thing nobody mentions is safety. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the weather is legit. And if you're into photography, this place is challenging.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The South side vs the West side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Riverside for 3 years. Moved from Miami for cost of living. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is solid. We bought in 2019 at k and it's now worth up significantly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 4-bed in a safe area. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable.

**Employment:**
hospitality is strong here. engineering is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are stable for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The outdoor scene is decent - we have desert landscapes within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Riverside schools are decent. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Nightlife is limited. Property taxes are high. And healthcare can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For young professionals, I'd say this is a 5/10. Definitely worth checking out.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

I've been here 9 years and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The thing nobody mentions is traffic. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the healthcare is legit. And if you're into fishing, this place is challenging.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Greenfield side vs the Eastside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Feel free to reach out with questions..

We moved here with our family and it exceeded my expectations. Schools in Old Town area are solid. Kids love it here.

I've been in Eastside for 1 years. Moved from Austin for quality of life. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is underrated. We bought in 2016 at k and it's now worth down slightly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 2-bed in a safe area. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts.

**Employment:**

**Quality of Life:**
the quality of life is solid. The outdoor scene is surprisingly good - we have desert landscapes within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**The Bad:**

**Bottom line:**

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a contractor, 28, moved here 5 years ago from Boston. I've lived in Riverside and Westside, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Growing food and restaurant scene
2. Strong job market in several industries
3. Four distinct seasons
4. The people are generally solid - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Chain restaurants dominate
2. Limited entertainment options
3. The community vibe situation is competitive and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Riverside: Great for singles. underrated vibes, walkable.
- Westside: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Boston, everything felt solid. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are manageable. Gas is manageable. You can live comfortably on $80K-$140K here.

**Final verdict:**
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a lawyer who relocated here from Denver about 7 years ago. The main reasons were retirement and retirement.

Pros I've experienced:
- Good healthcare facilities
- Decent public transit for the size
- Four distinct seasons

Cons that are real:
- Winters are long and cold
- Limited shopping options

Financially, we've found it tough compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are developing, gas is challenging.

Socially, it's not perfect but it works for me. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..
