Raising a family in Fort Madison -thoughts?

We're a young couple and Homes are going for about $95,900 on average. The unemployment rate is 2.3%, which is pretty low. Crime rate is something to consider -Fort Madison sits at 664.0 per 100K. Rent is about $824/month for a decent place. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus.

Pros:
- Growing food scene
- Good schools
- Walkable downtown
- Plenty of shopping options
- Good airport connections

Cons:
- Traffic can be terrible
- Limited nightlife
- High property taxes
- Poor road conditions
- Far from major airports
Thoughts? The food scene here is surprisingly good. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a accountant, 46, moved here 13 years ago from San Francisco. I've lived in Riverside and North, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Good internet infrastructure
2. Four distinct seasons
3. Good airport with direct flights
4. The people are generally decent - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Not a lot of cultural diversity
2. Dating scene is rough
3. The walkability situation is manageable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Riverside: Great for couples. tough vibes, walkable.
- North: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from San Francisco, everything felt hit or miss. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are growing. Gas is developing. You can live comfortably on $60K-$90K here.

**Final verdict:**
Hope this helps!. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Bought a house here in 2015 and I have mixed feelings honestly. Property values have gone about the same since then.

As someone who grew up here, I love the pace of life here. A lot has changed in the past few years though. cost of living used to be much manageable but now it's surprisingly good.
