Should I move to Fort Madison or stay in Portland?

Alright, Just moved here 11 months ago and The median home value here is around $95,900, which is actually reasonable. Homes are going for about $95,900 on average. It's a a small town city with about 10,221 people. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The city has invested a lot in new development. Would love some local perspective. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The suburbs are where most families end up. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The food scene here is surprisingly good. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 4-bedroom. I genuinely enjoy living here. Compared to Seattle it's challenging.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are challenging, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem average.

I've been here 6 years and it was the best decision I ever made. The thing nobody mentions is school system. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the healthcare is legit. And if you're into skiing, this place is better than expected.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Sunset side vs the Pine Hills side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Hot take but I genuinely enjoy living here. I know a lot of people disagree but after 10 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Weather-wise, the summers are underrated and winters are competitive. You get used to it after the first year.

I work in education here and I have mixed feelings honestly. The job market for my field is excellent. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..
