Curious what people think. I'm a remote worker and It's a a smaller city city with about 91,730 people. With a population of 91,730, Fort Myers is a smaller city. Crime rate is something to consider -Fort Myers sits at 570.9 per 100K. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years.
Pros:
- Great weather
- Nice parks and trails
- Low taxes
- Plenty of shopping options
- Good airport connections
Cons:
- Not very walkable
- Lack of diversity
- Boring for young people
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Not enough green space
Anyone in a similar situation? There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem challenging.
I've been here 10 years and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The thing nobody mentions is traffic. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the outdoor recreation is legit. And if you're into photography, this place is improving.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Lakewood side vs the South side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

I've lived in East for about 7 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I love the pace of life here. When I first moved here from Austin, I was surprised by public transit. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Nice parks and green spaces
- The food scene scene is average
The downsides:
- Limited shopping options
- Far from beaches/mountains
Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for couples. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

My experience has been mostly positive. I genuinely enjoy living here. The only thing I'd watch out for is walkability. Other than that, Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 6 years ago from Portland and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Springfield. It's decent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is competitive right now, especially in government. If you're in retail you might struggle.
People: Generally average. It took about 6 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: better than expected. Tons of options if you like Asian.
Feel free to reach out with questions..

I've been here 11 years and it was the best decision I ever made. The thing nobody mentions is dating scene. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the walkability is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is average.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a nurse, 28, moved here 5 years ago from Houston. I've lived in The Heights and Meadowbrook, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Nice parks and green spaces
2. Strong job market in several industries
3. Diverse dining options
4. The people are generally hit or miss - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Homeless population growing downtown
2. Limited entertainment options
3. The healthcare situation is wild and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- The Heights: Great for couples. solid vibes, walkable.
- Meadowbrook: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Houston, everything felt decent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are stable. Gas is developing. You can live comfortably on $80K-$150K here.
**Final verdict:**
Give it a chance - it might surprise you.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value cultural scene, you'll love it. The nightlife is genuinely decent and I've found it's been a really good experience overall. My neighborhood (The Heights) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Nashville, be prepared for the culture shock. nightlife is completely different here. And Not a lot of cultural diversity.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
