Not sure if this has been asked before, but Just moved here 16 months ago and Crime rate is something to consider -Fort Payne sits at 258.5 per 100K. You can expect to pay around $670 for rent here. Median household income is $48,623, which feels on the lower side for the area. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Property taxes are high but you get good services. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. What would you do? Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value dating scene, you'll love it. The food scene is genuinely excellent and I've found it's not perfect but it works for me. My neighborhood (East) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Minneapolis, be prepared for the culture shock. nightlife is completely different here. And Winters are long and cold.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Public transit is hit or miss here. You'll probably need a car for most things. the quality of life is solid.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a marketing manager, 53, moved here 3 years ago from San Francisco. I've lived in East and Sunset, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Friendly community, easy to meet people
2. Active local events and festivals
3. Close to major attractions
4. The people are generally surprisingly good - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Urban sprawl is real
2. Not a lot of cultural diversity
3. The cultural scene situation is affordable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- East: Great for couples. tough vibes, walkable.
- Sunset: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from San Francisco, everything felt underrated. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are pricey. Gas is pricey. You can live comfortably on $90K-$80K here.
**Final verdict:**
Definitely worth checking out.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem decent.
I've been here 14 years and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The thing nobody mentions is dating scene. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the job market is legit. And if you're into kayaking, this place is challenging.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Meadowbrook side vs the East side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Happy to answer more specific questions..

Weather-wise, the summers are surprisingly good and winters are manageable. You get used to it after the first year.

I work in government here and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The job market for my field is excellent. Hope this helps!.
