Fort Wayne quality of life — am I missing something?

Anyone else feel this way? I'm a 45-year-old sales rep and The unemployment rate is 3.6%, which is pretty low. Rent is about $959/month for a decent place. Homes are going for about $169,700 on average. It's changing fast — some good, some not so much. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Property taxes are high but you get good services.

Pros:
- Friendly people
- Growing food scene
- Easy commute
- Strong sense of community
- Active local events

Cons:
- Cold winters
- High property taxes
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Homelessness issues downtown
- Not enough green space
The suburbs are where most families end up. The suburbs are where most families end up. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Public transit is better than expected here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it's improved dramatically in recent years.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Fairview for 5 years. Moved from LA for a job opportunity. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is excellent. We bought in 2016 at k and it's now worth up significantly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 4-bed in a safe area. Lots of new construction which should help.

**Employment:**
marketing is strong here. engineering is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are developing for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
I genuinely enjoy living here. The outdoor scene is surprisingly good - we have lakes within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Fairview schools are underrated. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Rising rent and home prices. Property taxes are high. And job market can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For families, I'd say this is a 7/10. Hope this helps!. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Weather-wise, the summers are tough and winters are pricey. You get used to it after the first year.

Hot take but it was the best decision I ever made. I know a lot of people disagree but after 3 years here, that's my honest assessment.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 4 years ago from Baltimore and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Pine Hills. It's excellent for what you get.

Jobs: The market is reasonable right now, especially in tech. If you're in legal you might struggle.

People: Generally average. It took about 5 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: better than expected. Tons of options if you like Indian.

Hope this helps!.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a contractor, 55, moved here 7 years ago from Houston. I've lived in Springfield and Eastside, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Strong job market in several industries
2. Good internet infrastructure
3. Four distinct seasons
4. The people are generally excellent - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Property taxes are high
2. Can feel isolated
3. The pet-friendliness situation is wild and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Springfield: Great for retirees. decent vibes, walkable.
- Eastside: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Houston, everything felt solid. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are manageable. Gas is manageable. You can live comfortably on $50K-$150K here.

**Final verdict:**
No regrets on my end.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 1 years ago from Portland and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in North. It's improving for what you get.

Jobs: The market is wild right now, especially in real estate. If you're in healthcare you might struggle.

People: Generally better than expected. It took about 18 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like Mexican.

Hope this helps!.
