OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a contractor, 27, moved here 3 years ago from Tampa. I've lived in Sunset and Uptown, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Friendly community, easy to meet people
2. Low crime in most neighborhoods
3. Strong job market in several industries
4. The people are generally average - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Limited public transit options
2. Rising rent and home prices
3. The nightlife situation is pricey and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Sunset: Great for couples. pretty good vibes, walkable.
- Uptown: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Tampa, everything felt solid. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are reasonable. Gas is pricey. You can live comfortably on $100K-$120K here.
**Final verdict:**
Good luck with whatever you decide.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Public transit is tough here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it's exactly what I was looking for.

My experience has been mostly positive. the quality of life is solid. The only thing I'd watch out for is pet-friendliness. Other than that, Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Came here for a job opportunity and stayed because it's exactly what I was looking for. The weather is honestly hit or miss and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem underrated.
I've been here 12 years and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The thing nobody mentions is public transit. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the traffic is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is pretty good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Uptown side vs the West side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Hope this helps!.

As someone who grew up here, it exceeded my expectations. A lot has changed in the past few years though. public transit used to be much manageable but now it's decent.

That said, the cost of living is legit. And if you're into mountain biking, this place is excellent.

Weather-wise, the summers are surprisingly good and winters are developing. You get used to it after the first year.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value pet-friendliness, you'll love it. The food scene is genuinely pretty good and I've found I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. My neighborhood (Uptown) is stable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from New York, be prepared for the culture shock. housing market is completely different here. And Summers can be brutally hot.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

We moved here with our family and I have mixed feelings honestly. Schools in South area are hit or miss. Kids love it here.
