The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. What do you all think? Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a social worker, 25, moved here 13 years ago from Baltimore. I've lived in Greenfield and West, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Close to major attractions
2. Affordable housing options
3. Diverse dining options
4. The people are generally better than expected - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Property taxes are high
2. Chain restaurants dominate
3. The food scene situation is wild and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Greenfield: Great for families. tough vibes, walkable.
- West: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Baltimore, everything felt solid. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are affordable. Gas is competitive. You can live comfortably on $90K-$90K here.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a nurse who relocated here from Portland about 14 years ago. The main reasons were a job opportunity and a fresh start.
Pros I've experienced:
- Decent public transit for the size
- Active local events and festivals
- Lots of family-friendly activities
Cons that are real:
- Not very walkable outside downtown
- Limited shopping options
Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are developing, gas is pretty good.
Socially, it's not perfect but it works for me. Happy to answer more specific questions..

Came here for a fresh start and stayed because the quality of life is solid. The cost of living is honestly pretty good and I don't see that changing anytime soon.
