Alright, My family moved here when I was a kid. Homes are going for about $81,500 on average. Rent is about $759/month for a decent place. The suburbs are where most families end up. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The suburbs are where most families end up. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much.

I've lived in South for about 4 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's not perfect but it works for me. When I first moved here from San Francisco, I was surprised by healthcare. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Decent public transit for the size
- Lots of new development happening
- The walkability scene is hit or miss
The downsides:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Can feel isolated
Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for families. Hope this helps!.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem solid.
I've been here 10 years and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The thing nobody mentions is school system. It's growing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the traffic is legit. And if you're into mountain biking, this place is pretty good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Old Town side vs the Westside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..
