I grew up here but left for a while. You can expect to pay around $1,093 for rent here. Property taxes are high but you get good services. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Am I overthinking this? It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse.

I've been living here for 3 years and I'd say I genuinely enjoy living here. The traffic is surprisingly good compared to other places I've lived. Overall Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a chef, 53, moved here 2 years ago from Tampa. I've lived in Eastside and East, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Nice parks and green spaces
2. Four distinct seasons
3. Diverse dining options
4. The people are generally hit or miss - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Property taxes are high
2. Dating scene is rough
3. The nightlife situation is established and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Eastside: Great for young professionals. surprisingly good vibes, walkable.
- East: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Tampa, everything felt tough. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are competitive. Gas is established. You can live comfortably on $90K-$130K here.
**Final verdict:**
Hope this helps!. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a sales manager who relocated here from San Francisco about 10 years ago. The main reasons were school and weather.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Lots of new development happening
- Strong sense of community
Cons that are real:
- Limited entertainment options
- Bugs and humidity in summer
Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are manageable, gas is better than expected.
Socially, I'm still on the fence after all this time. Hope this helps!.

My experience has been mostly positive. the quality of life is solid. The only thing I'd watch out for is weather. Other than that, It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.
I've been here 1 years and I have mixed feelings honestly. The thing nobody mentions is healthcare. It's growing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the outdoor recreation is legit. And if you're into biking, this place is average.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Pine Hills side vs the South side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Happy to answer more specific questions..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value community vibe, you'll love it. The cultural scene is genuinely better than expected and I've found it was the best decision I ever made. My neighborhood (Downtown) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Baltimore, be prepared for the culture shock. dating scene is completely different here. And Nightlife is limited.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Used to live on the Riverside side, now on the Oak Park side. Completely different vibe. it's improved dramatically in recent years.
