Most overrated things about Franklin Park

Hey folks, I'm retired and Crime rate is something to consider -Franklin Park sits at 231.1 per 100K. Rent is about $1,103/month for a decent place. Average temperature is around 51--F, so expect cold winters. Homes are going for about $261,700 on average. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The suburbs are where most families end up. Would love some local perspective. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The city has invested a lot in new development. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The city has invested a lot in new development.

We moved here with our family and I'm still on the fence after all this time. Schools in Downtown area are surprisingly good. Kids love it here.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a accountant who relocated here from San Francisco about 9 years ago. The main reasons were work and weather.

Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Good schools in most areas
- Decent public transit for the size

Cons that are real:
- Winters are long and cold
- Urban sprawl is real

Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are growing, gas is improving.

Socially, it's been a really good experience overall. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem solid.

I've been here 11 years and it exceeded my expectations. The thing nobody mentions is food scene. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the public transit is legit. And if you're into kayaking, this place is tough.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The North side vs the West side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..
