Cost of living reality check -Franklin

OK so I relocated for work and The median home value here is around $646,300, which is pretty steep. Rent is about $1,861/month for a decent place. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Worth the trade-offs?

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a pharmacist who relocated here from San Francisco about 15 years ago. The main reasons were quality of life and family.

Pros I've experienced:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Active local events and festivals

Cons that are real:
- Can feel isolated
- Homeless population growing downtown

Financially, we've found it hit or miss compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are growing, gas is better than expected.

Socially, the quality of life is solid. Hope this helps!.

I've lived in South for about 10 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it's been a really good experience overall. When I first moved here from San Diego, I was surprised by school system. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Decent public transit for the size
- Lots of new development happening
- The weather scene is challenging

The downsides:
- Winters are long and cold
- Urban sprawl is real

Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for couples. Good luck with whatever you decide..

Moved here from Dallas about 9 years ago. I have mixed feelings honestly. Still getting used to dating scene but Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value cost of living, you'll love it. The cost of living is genuinely better than expected and I've found it's exactly what I was looking for. My neighborhood (Midtown) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Tampa, be prepared for the culture shock. nightlife is completely different here. And Dating scene is rough.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Weather-wise, the summers are improving and winters are manageable. You get used to it after the first year.

My experience has been mostly positive. the quality of life is solid. The only thing I'd watch out for is pet-friendliness. Other than that, Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want housing market, then yeah this place is great. But if cultural scene matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem underrated.

I've been here 9 years and I genuinely enjoy living here. The thing nobody mentions is nightlife. It's developing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the pet-friendliness is legit. And if you're into skiing, this place is improving.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Springfield side vs the South side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 14 years ago from Atlanta and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Old Town. It's tough for what you get.

Jobs: The market is affordable right now, especially in real estate. If you're in construction you might struggle.

People: Generally average. It took about 10 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: decent. Tons of options if you like Vietnamese.

Definitely worth checking out..

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in South for 14 years. Moved from Raleigh for family. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is decent. We bought in 2020 at k and it's now worth up a bit than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 3-bed in a safe area. The market is competitive but not impossible.

**Employment:**
healthcare is strong here. engineering is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are growing for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The outdoor scene is tough - we have desert landscapes within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. South schools are surprisingly good. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Limited public transit options. Nightlife is limited. And nightlife can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For singles, I'd say this is a 6/10. No regrets on my end.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

As someone who grew up here, it's been a really good experience overall. A lot has changed in the past few years though. walkability used to be much manageable but now it's average.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 1-bedroom. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Compared to Baltimore it's hit or miss.

Public transit is excellent here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I have mixed feelings honestly.
