Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.
I've been in Springfield for 8 years. Moved from Minneapolis for a job opportunity. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is solid. We bought in 2023 at k and it's now worth up significantly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 2-bed in a safe area. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals.
**Employment:**
government is strong here. legal is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are reasonable for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
I have mixed feelings honestly. The outdoor scene is pretty good - we have ski resorts within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Springfield schools are pretty good. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Summers can be brutally hot. Nightlife is limited. And housing market can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.
I've been here 14 years and it was the best decision I ever made. The thing nobody mentions is traffic. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the food scene is legit. And if you're into kayaking, this place is excellent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Oak Park side vs the Pine Hills side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a teacher who relocated here from Nashville about 1 years ago. The main reasons were weather and a fresh start.
Pros I've experienced:
- Decent public transit for the size
- Active local events and festivals
- Affordable housing options
Cons that are real:
- Winters are long and cold
- Not very walkable outside downtown
Financially, we've found it pretty good compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are reasonable, gas is better than expected.
Socially, I genuinely enjoy living here. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..
