First time home buyer in Frederick

First post here. I'm originally from Houston and Poverty rate is 7.3%, which is pretty low. The median home value here is around $365,200, which seems about average. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. TIA! It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse.

We moved here with our family and I genuinely enjoy living here. Schools in Highland area are underrated. Kids love it here.

I've been living here for 6 years and I'd say it's been a really good experience overall. The school system is hit or miss compared to other places I've lived. Overall Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 10 years ago from New York and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Westside. It's excellent for what you get.

Jobs: The market is reasonable right now, especially in marketing. If you're in tech you might struggle.

People: Generally challenging. It took about 15 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: challenging. Tons of options if you like Asian.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Hot take but it's exactly what I was looking for. I know a lot of people disagree but after 6 years here, that's my honest assessment.

I've lived in Downtown for about 2 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. When I first moved here from Austin, I was surprised by weather. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Good healthcare facilities
- Affordable housing options
- The healthcare scene is tough

The downsides:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Dating scene is rough

Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for remote workers. Hope this helps!.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a software engineer, 49, moved here 12 years ago from San Francisco. I've lived in Highland and Old Town, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Nice parks and green spaces
2. Lots of new development happening
3. Good airport with direct flights
4. The people are generally underrated - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Traffic during rush hour is rough
2. Property taxes are high
3. The traffic situation is growing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Highland: Great for remote workers. better than expected vibes, walkable.
- Old Town: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from San Francisco, everything felt surprisingly good. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are growing. Gas is competitive. You can live comfortably on $40K-$140K here.

**Final verdict:**
Would recommend to anyone considering it.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
