First time home buyer in Freeport

Been meaning to ask this. With a population of 1,544, Freeport is a small town. The median home value here is around $344,100, which seems about average. Median household income is $48,352, which feels on the lower side for the area. Rent is about $1,426/month for a decent place. Average temperature is around 46--F, so expect cold winters. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus.

Pros:
- Great weather
- Friendly people
- Lots of new development
- Walkable downtown
- Active local events

Cons:
- Hot summers
- High property taxes
- Homelessness issues downtown
Worth the trade-offs? Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Came here for retirement and stayed because I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The school system is honestly surprisingly good and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Hot take but I love the pace of life here. I know a lot of people disagree but after 5 years here, that's my honest assessment.

I work in real estate here and it's exactly what I was looking for. The job market for my field is tough. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a social worker who relocated here from Chicago about 6 years ago. The main reasons were work and weather.

Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Active local events and festivals
- Diverse dining options

Cons that are real:
- Road conditions need improvement
- Dating scene is rough

Financially, we've found it better than expected compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are stable, gas is hit or miss.

Socially, it's exactly what I was looking for. Good luck with whatever you decide..
