Not sure if this has been asked before, but Poverty rate is 16.3%, which is higher than I expected. It's a a major city city with about 544K people. Average temperature is around 64°F, so the weather is moderate. The city has invested a lot in new development. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Has anyone dealt with this? It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The city has invested a lot in new development. The suburbs are where most families end up. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Bought a house here in 2020 and I genuinely enjoy living here. Property values have gone down slightly since then.

I've lived in Oak Park for about 11 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. When I first moved here from Austin, I was surprised by dating scene. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- The safety scene is excellent
The downsides:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Limited entertainment options
Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for families. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value weather, you'll love it. The weather is genuinely pretty good and I've found the quality of life is solid. My neighborhood (Maple Ridge) is manageable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from San Francisco, be prepared for the culture shock. pet-friendliness is completely different here. And Chain restaurants dominate.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a sales manager who relocated here from Salt Lake City about 12 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and my partner's job.
Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Good schools in most areas
- Nice parks and green spaces
Cons that are real:
- Nightlife is limited
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
Financially, we've found it underrated compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are established, gas is excellent.
Socially, it exceeded my expectations. Happy to answer more specific questions..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.
I've been here 4 years and it's not perfect but it works for me. The thing nobody mentions is food scene. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the nightlife is legit. And if you're into mountain biking, this place is underrated.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The West side vs the South side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
