Poverty rate is 19.4%, which is higher than I expected. You can expect to pay around $822 for rent here. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The city has invested a lot in new development. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 3 years ago from Miami and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Meadowbrook. It's underrated for what you get.
Jobs: The market is developing right now, especially in finance. If you're in tech you might struggle.
People: Generally hit or miss. It took about 9 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: surprisingly good. Tons of options if you like Southern.
Definitely worth checking out..

Bought a house here in 2018 and the quality of life is solid. Property values have gone about the same since then.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem average.
I've been here 6 years and the quality of life is solid. The thing nobody mentions is dating scene. It's developing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the dating scene is legit. And if you're into biking, this place is underrated.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Lakewood side vs the North side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..

I've been here 11 years and I love the pace of life here. The thing nobody mentions is community vibe. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the job market is legit. And if you're into hiking, this place is decent.

Weather-wise, the summers are decent and winters are reasonable. You get used to it after the first year.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 1-bedroom. I genuinely enjoy living here. Compared to Pittsburgh it's solid.

I've lived in Highland for about 4 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I have mixed feelings honestly. When I first moved here from Chicago, I was surprised by traffic. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Decent public transit for the size
- Close to major attractions
- The cost of living scene is surprisingly good
The downsides:
- Limited entertainment options
- Far from beaches/mountains
Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for couples. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..
