Unpopular opinion about Gallup

You can expect to pay around $858 for rent here. Poverty rate is 23.7%, which is higher than I expected. Rent is about $858/month for a decent place. The unemployment rate is 3.3%, which is pretty low. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The weather takes some getting used to.

Pros:
- Low crime in most areas
- Diverse community
- Easy commute

Cons:
- Limited public transit
- Sprawl everywhere
- Lack of diversity
- Mosquitoes and humidity
- Chain restaurants dominate
Night life is decent if you know the right spots. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The food scene here is surprisingly good. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The suburbs are where most families end up.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 7 years ago from Nashville and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Midtown. It's better than expected for what you get.

Jobs: The market is growing right now, especially in engineering. If you're in consulting you might struggle.

People: Generally better than expected. It took about 18 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: tough. Tons of options if you like Asian.

Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Bought a house here in 2020 and it's not perfect but it works for me. Property values have gone up a bit since then.
