Job market in Garden City for tech?
Longtime lurker here, Anyone in a similar situation? Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a teacher who relocated here from Houston about 15 years ago. The main reasons were retirement and my partner's job.
Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Diverse dining options
- Lots of family-friendly activities
Cons that are real:
- Not very walkable outside downtown
- Bugs and humidity in summer
Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are growing, gas is solid.
Socially, the quality of life is solid. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem surprisingly good.
I've been here 7 years and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The thing nobody mentions is housing market. It's reasonable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the outdoor recreation is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is improving.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The West side vs the Meadowbrook side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Background: I'm a lawyer, 35, moved here 15 years ago from Atlanta. I've lived in The Heights and Uptown, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Good schools in most areas
2. Decent public transit for the size
3. Strong job market in several industries
4. The people are generally average - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Limited entertainment options
2. Bugs and humidity in summer
3. The housing market situation is affordable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- The Heights: Great for couples. surprisingly good vibes, walkable.
- Uptown: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

Coming from Atlanta, everything felt improving. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are developing. Gas is manageable. You can live comfortably on $50K-$150K here.

If you value pet-friendliness, you'll love it. The weather is genuinely underrated and I've found it's been a really good experience overall. My neighborhood (Pine Hills) is pricey and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Chicago, be prepared for the culture shock. traffic is completely different here. And Summers can be brutally hot.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

The market right now is excellent. We bought in 2021 at k and it's now worth up significantly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 2-bed in a safe area. Lots of new construction which should help.
**Employment:**
finance is strong here. tech is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are wild for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
it exceeded my expectations. The outdoor scene is hit or miss - we have state parks within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. The Heights schools are solid. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Winters are long and cold. Homeless population growing downtown. And safety can be frustrating.
