Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a social worker who relocated here from Austin about 9 years ago. The main reasons were a fresh start and my partner's job.
Pros I've experienced:
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Active local events and festivals
- Four distinct seasons
Cons that are real:
- Property taxes are high
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
Financially, we've found it solid compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are wild, gas is better than expected.
Socially, it's been a really good experience overall. Definitely worth checking out..

As someone who grew up here, it's exactly what I was looking for. A lot has changed in the past few years though. walkability used to be much competitive but now it's underrated.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a contractor who relocated here from San Francisco about 6 years ago. The main reasons were work and school.
Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Good airport with direct flights
- Diverse dining options
Cons that are real:
- Limited high-paying job options
- Property taxes are high
Financially, we've found it pretty good compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are wild, gas is hit or miss.
Socially, it's improved dramatically in recent years. Feel free to reach out with questions..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value school system, you'll love it. The traffic is genuinely improving and I've found the quality of life is solid. My neighborhood (East) is established and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Portland, be prepared for the culture shock. safety is completely different here. And Winters are long and cold.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a chef, 34, moved here 6 years ago from Houston. I've lived in South and Old Town, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Decent public transit for the size
2. Four distinct seasons
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally underrated - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Nightlife is limited
2. Can feel isolated
3. The outdoor recreation situation is stable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- South: Great for families. challenging vibes, walkable.
- Old Town: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Houston, everything felt decent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are growing. Gas is growing. You can live comfortably on $60K-$130K here.
**Final verdict:**
It's not for everyone but it works for us.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

I've lived in Riverside for about 1 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. When I first moved here from Minneapolis, I was surprised by cost of living. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Affordable housing options
- The food scene scene is better than expected
The downsides:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Rising rent and home prices
Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for singles. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..
