The good and bad of living in Gardendale

Anyone else feel this way? Military spouse here. Crime rate is something to consider -Gardendale sits at 211.7 per 100K. Average temperature is around 62--F, so the weather is moderate. You can expect to pay around $1,151 for rent here. The food scene here is surprisingly good. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Does this match your experience? I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The city has invested a lot in new development. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The food scene here is surprisingly good. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The food scene here is surprisingly good. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value pet-friendliness, you'll love it. The dating scene is genuinely better than expected and I've found the quality of life is solid. My neighborhood (West) is established and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from New York, be prepared for the culture shock. job market is completely different here. And Can feel isolated.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
