Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem surprisingly good.
I've been here 4 years and it exceeded my expectations. The thing nobody mentions is food scene. It's reasonable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the pet-friendliness is legit. And if you're into mountain biking, this place is underrated.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Oak Park side vs the Meadowbrook side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 6 years ago from San Francisco and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Eastside. It's solid for what you get.
Jobs: The market is established right now, especially in engineering. If you're in government you might struggle.
People: Generally challenging. It took about 13 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: hit or miss. Tons of options if you like Korean.
Hope this helps!.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a nurse who relocated here from LA about 4 years ago. The main reasons were work and family.
Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Good schools in most areas
- Good healthcare facilities
Cons that are real:
- Road conditions need improvement
- Limited entertainment options
Financially, we've found it solid compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are competitive, gas is solid.
Socially, I have mixed feelings honestly. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are underrated, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

I've been living here for 9 years and I'd say it's been a really good experience overall. The housing market is underrated compared to other places I've lived. Overall Feel free to reach out with questions..
