Raising a family in Gary -thoughts?

Curious what people think. I'm single, late 30s, and The median home value here is around $85,300, which is actually reasonable. The unemployment rate is 6.6%, which is concerning. Median household income is $37,380, which feels on the lower side for the area. Average temperature is around 50--F, so expect cold winters. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The suburbs are where most families end up. The food scene here is surprisingly good.

Pros:
- Friendly people
- Easy commute
- Active local events

Cons:
- High property taxes
- Mosquitoes and humidity
- Homelessness issues downtown
- Not enough green space
The food scene here is surprisingly good. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Property taxes are high but you get good services. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The food scene here is surprisingly good. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The food scene here is surprisingly good. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The weather takes some getting used to. The city has invested a lot in new development. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Property taxes are high but you get good services. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The food scene here is surprisingly good. OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 15 years ago from Salt Lake City and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Riverside. It's solid for what you get.

Jobs: The market is affordable right now, especially in retail. If you're in real estate you might struggle.

People: Generally challenging. It took about 18 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: decent. Tons of options if you like craft beer.

Definitely worth checking out..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value traffic, you'll love it. The community vibe is genuinely underrated and I've found the quality of life is solid. My neighborhood (Westside) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Chicago, be prepared for the culture shock. healthcare is completely different here. And Summers can be brutally hot.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Came here for weather and stayed because it was the best decision I ever made. The cultural scene is honestly improving and I don't see that changing anytime soon.
