Remote worker thinking about Gastonia

Hey, I'm single, late 40s, and Median household income is $60,554, which feels about average for the area. Homes are going for about $250,000 on average. It's a a smaller city city with about 81,632 people. The unemployment rate is 3.3%, which is pretty low. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Thoughts? The city has invested a lot in new development. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Maple Ridge for 15 years. Moved from Miami for retirement. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is better than expected. We bought in 2021 at k and it's now worth about the same than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 3-bed in a safe area. Older homes are where the value is.

**Employment:**
hospitality is strong here. finance is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are reasonable for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
I'm still on the fence after all this time. The outdoor scene is solid - we have hiking trails within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Maple Ridge schools are surprisingly good. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Winters are long and cold. Limited entertainment options. And school system can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For young professionals, I'd say this is a 6/10. Definitely worth checking out.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it's improved dramatically in recent years. No regrets on my end..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.

I've been here 4 years and the quality of life is solid. The thing nobody mentions is food scene. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the school system is legit. And if you're into biking, this place is solid.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Greenfield side vs the Midtown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Definitely worth checking out..

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 3-bedroom. it's exactly what I was looking for. Compared to Charlotte it's pretty good.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a accountant who relocated here from San Diego about 5 years ago. The main reasons were school and school.

Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Good internet infrastructure

Cons that are real:
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Can feel isolated

Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are wild, gas is improving.

Socially, I love the pace of life here. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Weather-wise, the summers are average and winters are stable. You get used to it after the first year.

Hot take but it's been a really good experience overall. I know a lot of people disagree but after 11 years here, that's my honest assessment.

I've been living here for 8 years and I'd say I have mixed feelings honestly. The traffic is tough compared to other places I've lived. Overall Would recommend to anyone considering it..
