My experience has been mostly positive. I'm still on the fence after all this time. The only thing I'd watch out for is public transit. Other than that, Feel free to reach out with questions..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a writer who relocated here from Austin about 14 years ago. The main reasons were a job opportunity and retirement.

Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Four distinct seasons
- Lots of family-friendly activities

Cons that are real:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Bugs and humidity in summer

Financially, we've found it tough compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are manageable, gas is tough.

Socially, I have mixed feelings honestly. Good luck with whatever you decide..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 5 years ago from Miami and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in East. It's tough for what you get.

Jobs: The market is pricey right now, especially in engineering. If you're in engineering you might struggle.

People: Generally underrated. It took about 11 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: hit or miss. Tons of options if you like Mexican.

Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem surprisingly good.

I've been here 6 years and the quality of life is solid. The thing nobody mentions is food scene. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the safety is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is better than expected.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Greenfield side vs the Oak Park side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

We moved here with our family and it's not perfect but it works for me. Schools in Oak Park area are challenging. Kids love it here.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a marketing manager, 24, moved here 4 years ago from Phoenix. I've lived in Cedar Grove and Eastside, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Decent public transit for the size
2. Strong job market in several industries
3. Lots of new development happening
4. The people are generally average - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Not a lot of cultural diversity
2. Bugs and humidity in summer
3. The cultural scene situation is wild and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Cedar Grove: Great for families. average vibes, walkable.
- Eastside: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Phoenix, everything felt average. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are stable. Gas is competitive. You can live comfortably on $90K-$80K here.

**Final verdict:**
Would recommend to anyone considering it.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
