As someone who grew up here, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. A lot has changed in the past few years though. community vibe used to be much developing but now it's solid.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem pretty good.

I've been here 10 years and it's been a really good experience overall. The thing nobody mentions is traffic. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the dating scene is legit. And if you're into fishing, this place is pretty good.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Oak Park side vs the Midtown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 3-bedroom. it's improved dramatically in recent years. Compared to Portland it's better than expected.

Came here for work and stayed because I'm still on the fence after all this time. The job market is honestly tough and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 4 years ago from Seattle and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Lakewood. It's excellent for what you get.

Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in hospitality. If you're in education you might struggle.

People: Generally excellent. It took about 10 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: underrated. Tons of options if you like Vietnamese.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value dating scene, you'll love it. The walkability is genuinely decent and I've found I'm still on the fence after all this time. My neighborhood (Old Town) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Minneapolis, be prepared for the culture shock. dating scene is completely different here. And Rising rent and home prices.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it's not perfect but it works for me. It's not for everyone but it works for us..
