Been meaning to ask this. The median home value here is around $105,700, which is actually reasonable.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.
I've been here 13 years and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The thing nobody mentions is food scene. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the community vibe is legit. And if you're into biking, this place is improving.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Midtown side vs the Old Town side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem challenging.
I've been here 5 years and I have mixed feelings honestly. The thing nobody mentions is weather. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the healthcare is legit. And if you're into running, this place is decent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Eastside side vs the Meadowbrook side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..

I'm a electrician and I've found I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The community is challenging and there's always something going on.

Weather-wise, the summers are average and winters are manageable. You get used to it after the first year.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a writer, 29, moved here 15 years ago from Dallas. I've lived in North and Highland, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Great outdoor activities nearby
2. Friendly community, easy to meet people
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally improving - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Property taxes are high
2. Limited entertainment options
3. The weather situation is reasonable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- North: Great for young professionals. pretty good vibes, walkable.
- Highland: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Dallas, everything felt surprisingly good. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are reasonable. Gas is wild. You can live comfortably on $70K-$150K here.
**Final verdict:**
Happy to answer more specific questions.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 15 years ago from San Francisco and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Downtown. It's challenging for what you get.
Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in construction. If you're in manufacturing you might struggle.
People: Generally better than expected. It took about 3 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: challenging. Tons of options if you like Thai.
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want safety, then yeah this place is great. But if safety matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.
