Household incomes average around $87,898 in Gloucester. You can expect to pay around $1,395 for rent here. With a population of 29,862, Gloucester is a smaller city. The median home value here is around $587,800, which is pretty steep. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. What would you do? Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The suburbs are where most families end up. The city has invested a lot in new development. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are better than expected, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. I'm still on the fence after all this time. Internet is underrated in most areas.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is community vibe. it's improved dramatically in recent years. Worth doing your research before committing.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a marketing manager who relocated here from Chicago about 13 years ago. The main reasons were my partner's job and a job opportunity.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Four distinct seasons
- Strong sense of community
Cons that are real:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Bugs and humidity in summer
Financially, we've found it solid compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are growing, gas is hit or miss.
Socially, it was the best decision I ever made. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem challenging.
I've been here 5 years and I have mixed feelings honestly. The thing nobody mentions is cost of living. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the public transit is legit. And if you're into golfing, this place is average.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Downtown side vs the North side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a pharmacist, 42, moved here 1 years ago from Miami. I've lived in Sunset and The Heights, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Decent public transit for the size
2. Lots of new development happening
3. Active local events and festivals
4. The people are generally better than expected - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Rising rent and home prices
2. Homeless population growing downtown
3. The job market situation is growing and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Sunset: Great for singles. excellent vibes, walkable.
- The Heights: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Miami, everything felt underrated. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are manageable. Gas is wild. You can live comfortably on $80K-$130K here.
**Final verdict:**
Feel free to reach out with questions.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 15 years ago from Portland and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Oak Park. It's solid for what you get.
Jobs: The market is developing right now, especially in construction. If you're in real estate you might struggle.
People: Generally improving. It took about 12 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: average. Tons of options if you like sushi.
No regrets on my end..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value job market, you'll love it. The safety is genuinely improving and I've found I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. My neighborhood (Downtown) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Phoenix, be prepared for the culture shock. cost of living is completely different here. And Property taxes are high.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
