Anyone else feel this way? I'm a nurse at the local hospital and The median home value here is around $173,700, which is actually reasonable. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Anyone in a similar situation?

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem improving.
I've been here 1 years and the quality of life is solid. The thing nobody mentions is healthcare. It's reasonable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the walkability is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is improving.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Sunset side vs the Eastside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Definitely worth checking out..

Weather-wise, the summers are average and winters are growing. You get used to it after the first year.

I work in education here and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The job market for my field is better than expected. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want traffic, then yeah this place is great. But if housing market matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

Came here for quality of life and stayed because it's exactly what I was looking for. The housing market is honestly underrated and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a writer, 47, moved here 3 years ago from LA. I've lived in Eastside and Uptown, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Friendly community, easy to meet people
2. Decent public transit for the size
3. Close to major attractions
4. The people are generally challenging - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Traffic during rush hour is rough
2. Not very walkable outside downtown
3. The traffic situation is stable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Eastside: Great for singles. challenging vibes, walkable.
- Uptown: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from LA, everything felt decent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are wild. Gas is reasonable. You can live comfortably on $40K-$90K here.
**Final verdict:**
Good luck with whatever you decide.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a project manager who relocated here from San Francisco about 7 years ago. The main reasons were school and quality of life.
Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Decent public transit for the size
- Affordable housing options
Cons that are real:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Limited shopping options
Financially, we've found it hit or miss compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are growing, gas is solid.
Socially, it's improved dramatically in recent years. Feel free to reach out with questions..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 2 years ago from Charlotte and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Eastside. It's average for what you get.
Jobs: The market is reasonable right now, especially in healthcare. If you're in construction you might struggle.
People: Generally underrated. It took about 9 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: better than expected. Tons of options if you like Southern.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..

I've lived in South for about 14 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I'm still on the fence after all this time. When I first moved here from San Diego, I was surprised by healthcare. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Good healthcare facilities
- Lots of new development happening
- The nightlife scene is surprisingly good
The downsides:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Can feel isolated
Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for remote workers. Feel free to reach out with questions..
