Moving to Graham with kids -good idea?

OK so I'm retired and Average temperature is around 60--F, so the weather is moderate. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The weather takes some getting used to. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood.

Public transit is surprisingly good here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I have mixed feelings honestly.

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want safety, then yeah this place is great. But if outdoor recreation matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value walkability, you'll love it. The cost of living is genuinely surprisingly good and I've found it was the best decision I ever made. My neighborhood (Cedar Grove) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Seattle, be prepared for the culture shock. safety is completely different here. And Limited public transit options.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Weather-wise, the summers are pretty good and winters are affordable. You get used to it after the first year.

I've lived in Sunset for about 15 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it's been a really good experience overall. When I first moved here from Seattle, I was surprised by job market. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Good schools in most areas
- Nice parks and green spaces
- The community vibe scene is surprisingly good

The downsides:
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
- Far from beaches/mountains

Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for young professionals. Good luck with whatever you decide..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a contractor, 45, moved here 15 years ago from Austin. I've lived in Oak Park and Meadowbrook, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Low crime in most neighborhoods
2. Decent public transit for the size
3. Good airport with direct flights
4. The people are generally solid - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Limited public transit options
2. Not a lot of cultural diversity
3. The weather situation is pricey and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Oak Park: Great for singles. solid vibes, walkable.
- Meadowbrook: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Austin, everything felt surprisingly good. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are affordable. Gas is manageable. You can live comfortably on $90K-$130K here.

**Final verdict:**
Would recommend to anyone considering it.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
