Is Grand Marais worth moving to in 2026?

Anyone else feel this way? Household incomes average around $73,846 in Grand Marais. Homes are going for about $283,700 on average. Poverty rate is 7.7%, which is pretty low. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The city has invested a lot in new development. What would you do? It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The suburbs are where most families end up. The food scene here is surprisingly good.

Used to live on the Oak Park side, now on the Sunset side. Completely different vibe. it's exactly what I was looking for.

I've been living here for 1 years and I'd say I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The pet-friendliness is underrated compared to other places I've lived. Overall Good luck with whatever you decide..

As someone who grew up here, I love the pace of life here. A lot has changed in the past few years though. school system used to be much competitive but now it's underrated.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value cost of living, you'll love it. The public transit is genuinely underrated and I've found it's been a really good experience overall. My neighborhood (The Heights) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Austin, be prepared for the culture shock. outdoor recreation is completely different here. And Urban sprawl is real.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 11 years ago from Baltimore and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Springfield. It's decent for what you get.

Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in retail. If you're in manufacturing you might struggle.

People: Generally surprisingly good. It took about 11 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: tough. Tons of options if you like Thai.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..
