Is Grand Rapids worth moving to in 2026?

Longtime lurker here, I relocated for work and Rent is about $1,191/month for a decent place. Household incomes average around $65,526 in Grand Rapids. It's a a mid-size city city with about 198K people. The suburbs are where most families end up. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Thoughts? Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The weather takes some getting used to. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. It's not perfect, but the community is solid.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a accountant who relocated here from New York about 4 years ago. The main reasons were my partner's job and a job opportunity.

Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Active local events and festivals
- Lots of family-friendly activities

Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Not very walkable outside downtown

Financially, we've found it challenging compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are reasonable, gas is solid.

Socially, it was the best decision I ever made. Would recommend to anyone considering it..
