Raising a family in Grand Rapids — thoughts?
OK so Would love some local perspective. I'd say it's better for families than young singles.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem hit or miss.
I've been here 11 years and the quality of life is solid. The thing nobody mentions is walkability. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the safety is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is pretty good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The West side vs the Highland side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a electrician who relocated here from Houston about 6 years ago. The main reasons were work and weather.
Pros I've experienced:
- Good healthcare facilities
- Good internet infrastructure
- Lots of family-friendly activities
Cons that are real:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Chain restaurants dominate
Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are manageable, gas is solid.
Socially, I love the pace of life here. Good luck with whatever you decide..
