Longtime lurker here, Rent is about $1,007/month for a decent place. Poverty rate is 12.8%, which is around average. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The food scene here is surprisingly good. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Property taxes are high but you get good services. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly.

Public transit is underrated here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it exceeded my expectations.

We moved here with our family and it's exactly what I was looking for. Schools in Springfield area are excellent. Kids love it here.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.
I've been in South for 9 years. Moved from Pittsburgh for a fresh start. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is challenging. We bought in 2024 at k and it's now worth down slightly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 4-bed in a safe area. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals.
**Employment:**
construction is strong here. tech is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are pricey for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
it's not perfect but it works for me. The outdoor scene is solid - we have desert landscapes within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. South schools are average. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Winters are long and cold. Nightlife is limited. And school system can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**
For retirees, I'd say this is a 9/10. No regrets on my end.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Hot take but it exceeded my expectations. I know a lot of people disagree but after 7 years here, that's my honest assessment.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are surprisingly good, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem tough.
I've been here 15 years and the quality of life is solid. The thing nobody mentions is weather. It's developing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the food scene is legit. And if you're into running, this place is decent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The North side vs the Highland side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Moved here from San Francisco about 1 years ago. I'm still on the fence after all this time. Still getting used to weather but Definitely worth checking out..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a physical therapist who relocated here from Miami about 2 years ago. The main reasons were my partner's job and cost of living.
Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Good healthcare facilities
- Strong job market in several industries
Cons that are real:
- Nightlife is limited
- Chain restaurants dominate
Financially, we've found it tough compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are stable, gas is improving.
Socially, I genuinely enjoy living here. It's not for everyone but it works for us..
