Cost of living reality check -Granite City

I've been here for 14 years and The unemployment rate is 3.8%, which is pretty low. Average temperature is around 56--F, so the weather is moderate. You can expect to pay around $761 for rent here. Crime rate is something to consider -Granite City sits at 822.9 per 100K. It's a a smaller city city with about 26,670 people. The weather takes some getting used to. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. It's not perfect, but the community is solid.

Pros:
- Friendly people
- Nice parks and trails
- Plenty of shopping options
- Good airport connections

Cons:
- Rising rent prices
- Sprawl everywhere
- Boring for young people
- Chain restaurants dominate
What do you all think? Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a pharmacist, 43, moved here 4 years ago from San Francisco. I've lived in Midtown and Greenfield, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Strong job market in several industries
2. Active local events and festivals
3. Good airport with direct flights
4. The people are generally average - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Not very walkable outside downtown
2. Limited shopping options
3. The pet-friendliness situation is developing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Midtown: Great for young professionals. decent vibes, walkable.
- Greenfield: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from San Francisco, everything felt excellent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are developing. Gas is stable. You can live comfortably on $80K-$140K here.

**Final verdict:**
It's not for everyone but it works for us.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem underrated.

I've been here 4 years and it's exactly what I was looking for. The thing nobody mentions is pet-friendliness. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the traffic is legit. And if you're into skiing, this place is improving.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Lakewood side vs the Highland side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Good luck with whatever you decide..

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 3-bedroom. I genuinely enjoy living here. Compared to Raleigh it's decent.

I'm a chef and I've found I'm still on the fence after all this time. The community is better than expected and there's always something going on.

Came here for family and stayed because it's improved dramatically in recent years. The nightlife is honestly excellent and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a nurse who relocated here from Charlotte about 11 years ago. The main reasons were a fresh start and retirement.

Pros I've experienced:
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Active local events and festivals
- Diverse dining options

Cons that are real:
- Limited high-paying job options
- Road conditions need improvement

Financially, we've found it tough compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are reasonable, gas is surprisingly good.

Socially, I genuinely enjoy living here. Definitely worth checking out..
