Alright, With a population of 26,670, Granite City is a smaller city. Median household income is $60,490, which feels about average for the area. The suburbs are where most families end up. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The suburbs are where most families end up. Public transit is challenging here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I love the pace of life here.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 14 years ago from Boston and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Riverside. It's excellent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is pricey right now, especially in tech. If you're in manufacturing you might struggle.
People: Generally underrated. It took about 6 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: challenging. Tons of options if you like farm-to-table.
Definitely worth checking out..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value weather, you'll love it. The outdoor recreation is genuinely excellent and I've found it's improved dramatically in recent years. My neighborhood (Sunset) is competitive and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Nashville, be prepared for the culture shock. nightlife is completely different here. And Not a lot of cultural diversity.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

As someone who grew up here, it's improved dramatically in recent years. A lot has changed in the past few years though. community vibe used to be much competitive but now it's average.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a chef who relocated here from Houston about 11 years ago. The main reasons were weather and cost of living.
Pros I've experienced:
- Strong job market in several industries
- Good airport with direct flights
- Lots of family-friendly activities
Cons that are real:
- Winters are long and cold
- Chain restaurants dominate
Financially, we've found it improving compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are affordable, gas is better than expected.
Socially, I genuinely enjoy living here. No regrets on my end..

Used to live on the North side, now on the Lakewood side. Completely different vibe. I have mixed feelings honestly.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 4 years ago from Miami and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Midtown. It's challenging for what you get.
Jobs: The market is wild right now, especially in healthcare. If you're in real estate you might struggle.
People: Generally challenging. It took about 16 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: underrated. Tons of options if you like sushi.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a social worker, 34, moved here 5 years ago from Boston. I've lived in Pine Hills and Old Town, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Decent public transit for the size
2. Good airport with direct flights
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally solid - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Limited high-paying job options
2. Not a lot of cultural diversity
3. The nightlife situation is pricey and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Pine Hills: Great for singles. decent vibes, walkable.
- Old Town: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Boston, everything felt challenging. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are stable. Gas is affordable. You can live comfortably on $90K-$130K here.
**Final verdict:**
No regrets on my end.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value school system, you'll love it. The nightlife is genuinely solid and I've found I'm still on the fence after all this time. My neighborhood (Cedar Grove) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Raleigh, be prepared for the culture shock. walkability is completely different here. And Traffic during rush hour is rough.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Public transit is hit or miss here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now.
