Hey everyone, Poverty rate is 4.1%, which is pretty low. Average temperature is around 65--F, so the weather is moderate. The unemployment rate is 3.1%, which is pretty low. You can expect to pay around $1,806 for rent here. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Am I wrong here? Appreciate any input. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, the quality of life is solid. Feel free to reach out with questions..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a real estate agent, 55, moved here 13 years ago from Houston. I've lived in Eastside and Pine Hills, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Low crime in most neighborhoods
2. Affordable housing options
3. Diverse dining options
4. The people are generally solid - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Traffic during rush hour is rough
2. Not very walkable outside downtown
3. The food scene situation is established and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Eastside: Great for couples. average vibes, walkable.
- Pine Hills: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Houston, everything felt better than expected. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are established. Gas is competitive. You can live comfortably on $60K-$90K here.
**Final verdict:**
Would recommend to anyone considering it.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. it's exactly what I was looking for. Internet is challenging in most areas.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 11 years ago from San Diego and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Old Town. It's underrated for what you get.
Jobs: The market is pricey right now, especially in engineering. If you're in engineering you might struggle.
People: Generally average. It took about 16 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like Vietnamese.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 1 years ago from Boston and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Cedar Grove. It's excellent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in tech. If you're in finance you might struggle.
People: Generally average. It took about 16 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: underrated. Tons of options if you like Southern.
No regrets on my end..

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is healthcare. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Worth doing your research before committing.

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want nightlife, then yeah this place is great. But if food scene matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

Used to live on the Riverside side, now on the Meadowbrook side. Completely different vibe. I'm still on the fence after all this time.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a teacher who relocated here from Chicago about 7 years ago. The main reasons were my partner's job and a fresh start.
Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Four distinct seasons
- Good airport with direct flights
Cons that are real:
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
- Chain restaurants dominate
Financially, we've found it solid compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are stable, gas is excellent.
Socially, it's been a really good experience overall. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Hot take but it was the best decision I ever made. I know a lot of people disagree but after 5 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem surprisingly good.
I've been here 12 years and it was the best decision I ever made. The thing nobody mentions is pet-friendliness. It's reasonable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the public transit is legit. And if you're into skiing, this place is decent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The The Heights side vs the Midtown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Happy to answer more specific questions..

Bought a house here in 2021 and it was the best decision I ever made. Property values have gone down slightly since then.
