Considering Great Falls vs Los Angeles -help me decide

Hey folks, Poverty rate is 7.5%, which is pretty low. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. What would you do? The weather takes some getting used to. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse.

Bought a house here in 2015 and it's not perfect but it works for me. Property values have gone up a bit since then.

The food scene here is excellent. Tons of great Italian places. I love the pace of life here.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 2-bedroom. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Compared to Boston it's pretty good.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 12 years ago from Houston and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in North. It's solid for what you get.

Jobs: The market is reasonable right now, especially in construction. If you're in legal you might struggle.

People: Generally tough. It took about 7 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: tough. Tons of options if you like sushi.

Happy to answer more specific questions..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a writer, 54, moved here 13 years ago from Austin. I've lived in Eastside and Midtown, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Good airport with direct flights
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally decent - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Homeless population growing downtown
2. Far from beaches/mountains
3. The nightlife situation is established and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Eastside: Great for remote workers. challenging vibes, walkable.
- Midtown: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Austin, everything felt average. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are stable. Gas is competitive. You can live comfortably on $40K-$140K here.

**Final verdict:**
Definitely worth checking out.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are pretty good, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Used to live on the North side, now on the Pine Hills side. Completely different vibe. I have mixed feelings honestly.
