I'm a software engineer who relocated here from Baltimore about 3 years ago. The main reasons were my partner's job and my partner's job.
Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Good internet infrastructure
- Active local events and festivals
Cons that are real:
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
- Dating scene is rough
Financially, we've found it challenging compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are wild, gas is better than expected.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value school system, you'll love it. The cost of living is genuinely better than expected and I've found I genuinely enjoy living here. My neighborhood (Midtown) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from San Francisco, be prepared for the culture shock. healthcare is completely different here. And Traffic during rush hour is rough.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Westside. It's excellent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is pricey right now, especially in construction. If you're in healthcare you might struggle.
People: Generally underrated. It took about 12 months to build a solid friend group.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a HR manager, 35, moved here 13 years ago from Charlotte. I've lived in Westside and West, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Lots of new development happening
3. Strong sense of community
4. The people are generally decent - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Road conditions need improvement
2. Far from beaches/mountains
3. The walkability situation is growing and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Westside: Great for retirees. excellent vibes, walkable.
- West: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
