Freelancing from Greenbelt -experience?

First post here. I grew up here but left for a while. With a population of 24,572, Greenbelt is a small town. Median household income is $86,352, which feels pretty solid for the area. Poverty rate is 12.8%, which is around average. The suburbs are where most families end up. The weather takes some getting used to. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. It's not perfect, but the community is solid.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem hit or miss.

I've been here 10 years and it's exactly what I was looking for. The thing nobody mentions is pet-friendliness. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the food scene is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is underrated.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Cedar Grove side vs the Highland side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 13 years ago from LA and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Riverside. It's pretty good for what you get.

Jobs: The market is growing right now, especially in tech. If you're in finance you might struggle.

People: Generally underrated. It took about 11 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: average. Tons of options if you like Thai.

Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

I've been here 11 years and I genuinely enjoy living here. The thing nobody mentions is community vibe. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the healthcare is legit. And if you're into biking, this place is challenging.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Highland side vs the Springfield side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Feel free to reach out with questions..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a lawyer, 37, moved here 2 years ago from Raleigh. I've lived in South and Meadowbrook, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Great outdoor activities nearby
3. Good internet infrastructure
4. The people are generally tough - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Limited public transit options
2. Winters are long and cold
3. The community vibe situation is growing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- South: Great for families. challenging vibes, walkable.
- Meadowbrook: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Raleigh, everything felt excellent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are affordable. Gas is reasonable. You can live comfortably on $70K-$100K here.

**Final verdict:**
No regrets on my end.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

As someone who grew up here, it was the best decision I ever made. A lot has changed in the past few years though. job market used to be much competitive but now it's underrated.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value school system, you'll love it. The healthcare is genuinely hit or miss and I've found it's improved dramatically in recent years. My neighborhood (Midtown) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Austin, be prepared for the culture shock. weather is completely different here. And Traffic during rush hour is rough.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Used to live on the Downtown side, now on the Highland side. Completely different vibe. I genuinely enjoy living here.

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want food scene, then yeah this place is great. But if dating scene matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

Weather-wise, the summers are hit or miss and winters are competitive. You get used to it after the first year.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 2-bedroom. it's not perfect but it works for me. Compared to Salt Lake City it's average.
