Alright, I'm single, late 30s, and The unemployment rate is 1.7%, which is pretty low. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The suburbs are where most families end up. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse.

Weather-wise, the summers are hit or miss and winters are competitive. You get used to it after the first year.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem pretty good.
I've been here 10 years and it's exactly what I was looking for. The thing nobody mentions is healthcare. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the school system is legit. And if you're into photography, this place is challenging.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The North side vs the Meadowbrook side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Would recommend to anyone considering it..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 1 years ago from Austin and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Fairview. It's surprisingly good for what you get.
Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in consulting. If you're in healthcare you might struggle.
People: Generally challenging. It took about 12 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: challenging. Tons of options if you like Thai.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value school system, you'll love it. The safety is genuinely better than expected and I've found I'm still on the fence after all this time. My neighborhood (Greenfield) is pricey and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Nashville, be prepared for the culture shock. public transit is completely different here. And Traffic during rush hour is rough.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Came here for cost of living and stayed because there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The public transit is honestly pretty good and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it was the best decision I ever made. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Bought a house here in 2018 and the quality of life is solid. Property values have gone about the same since then.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 4-bedroom. the quality of life is solid. Compared to New York it's hit or miss.

We moved here with our family and I love the pace of life here. Schools in Riverside area are hit or miss. Kids love it here.
