Thinking about relocating to Greenville from Portland

Been meaning to ask this. Military spouse here. Poverty rate is 14.4%, which is around average. Average temperature is around 56--F, so the weather is moderate. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. What do you all think? Looking forward to hearing from you all. The weather takes some getting used to. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The city has invested a lot in new development. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus.

I've been living here for 14 years and I'd say it was the best decision I ever made. The pet-friendliness is pretty good compared to other places I've lived. Overall Would recommend to anyone considering it..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a software engineer, 43, moved here 14 years ago from Salt Lake City. I've lived in Downtown and Lakewood, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Growing food and restaurant scene
2. Close to major attractions
3. Good airport with direct flights
4. The people are generally solid - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Nightlife is limited
2. Can feel isolated
3. The outdoor recreation situation is competitive and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Downtown: Great for remote workers. tough vibes, walkable.
- Lakewood: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Salt Lake City, everything felt surprisingly good. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are pricey. Gas is growing. You can live comfortably on $40K-$130K here.

**Final verdict:**
It's not for everyone but it works for us.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Came here for a job opportunity and stayed because it's not perfect but it works for me. The school system is honestly better than expected and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Public transit is hit or miss here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it's not perfect but it works for me.

Used to live on the West side, now on the Lakewood side. Completely different vibe. the quality of life is solid.
