Rent vs buy in Greenville -what makes sense?

So, With a population of 88,540, Greenville is a smaller city. The unemployment rate is 5.8%, which is about average. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Worth the trade-offs? People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Hot take but it's been a really good experience overall. I know a lot of people disagree but after 14 years here, that's my honest assessment.

I've been living here for 5 years and I'd say I genuinely enjoy living here. The cost of living is surprisingly good compared to other places I've lived. Overall Definitely worth checking out..

My experience has been mostly positive. I'm still on the fence after all this time. The only thing I'd watch out for is safety. Other than that, Hope this helps!.

As someone who grew up here, the quality of life is solid. A lot has changed in the past few years though. cost of living used to be much developing but now it's decent.

Bought a house here in 2021 and it exceeded my expectations. Property values have gone up significantly since then.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value safety, you'll love it. The school system is genuinely hit or miss and I've found it was the best decision I ever made. My neighborhood (East) is established and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Portland, be prepared for the culture shock. walkability is completely different here. And Limited high-paying job options.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Moved here from New York about 3 years ago. I have mixed feelings honestly. Still getting used to weather but Would recommend to anyone considering it..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a data analyst, 44, moved here 1 years ago from Phoenix. I've lived in Meadowbrook and South, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Great outdoor activities nearby
2. Good airport with direct flights
3. Strong sense of community
4. The people are generally decent - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Limited public transit options
2. Limited shopping options
3. The outdoor recreation situation is affordable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Meadowbrook: Great for couples. solid vibes, walkable.
- South: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Phoenix, everything felt solid. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are reasonable. Gas is competitive. You can live comfortably on $50K-$130K here.

**Final verdict:**
Feel free to reach out with questions.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
