Not sure if this has been asked before, but Downtown has improved a lot in recent years.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a lawyer, 42, moved here 14 years ago from San Francisco. I've lived in Midtown and Old Town, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Good schools in most areas
2. Good internet infrastructure
3. Close to major attractions
4. The people are generally surprisingly good - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Urban sprawl is real
2. Limited high-paying job options
3. The public transit situation is competitive and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Midtown: Great for retirees. pretty good vibes, walkable.
- Old Town: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from San Francisco, everything felt underrated. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are developing. Gas is stable. You can live comfortably on $100K-$70K here.
**Final verdict:**
Good luck with whatever you decide.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

I work in hospitality here and it was the best decision I ever made. The job market for my field is decent. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

The food scene here is solid. Tons of great Asian places. I have mixed feelings honestly.

I work in retail here and it's been a really good experience overall. The job market for my field is hit or miss. No regrets on my end..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a software engineer who relocated here from Tampa about 6 years ago. The main reasons were weather and retirement.
Pros I've experienced:
- Good internet infrastructure
- Four distinct seasons
- Diverse dining options
Cons that are real:
- Winters are long and cold
- Far from beaches/mountains
Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are manageable, gas is hit or miss.
Socially, I genuinely enjoy living here. Definitely worth checking out..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 2 years ago from Pittsburgh and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Pine Hills. It's underrated for what you get.
Jobs: The market is competitive right now, especially in government. If you're in tech you might struggle.
People: Generally surprisingly good. It took about 5 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: challenging. Tons of options if you like seafood.
Happy to answer more specific questions..

I've lived in Highland for about 12 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I have mixed feelings honestly. When I first moved here from Tampa, I was surprised by cost of living. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Strong job market in several industries
- Four distinct seasons
- The pet-friendliness scene is challenging
The downsides:
- Homeless population growing downtown
- Far from beaches/mountains
Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for remote workers. Would recommend to anyone considering it..
